Affogato Recipe
An affogato is a simple Italian dessert made by pouring hot espresso over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The contrast between bitter coffee and cold, creamy ice cream is the whole point, creating a finish that’s bold at first and smooth by the last bite.
- 1 Shot espresso
- 1 Scoop vanilla ice cream
Brew a single shot of espresso just before serving. Freshness matters more than strength here.
Place one scoop of vanilla ice cream into a small bowl or glass.
Pour the hot espresso directly over the ice cream.
Serve immediately with a spoon.
A Practical At-Home Version
You don’t need an espresso machine to make something close.
Brew a small amount of very strong coffee using one of the methods to make espresso without a machine, keeping the volume low and the flavor concentrated. Pour it hot over good vanilla ice cream and stop there.
Weak coffee flattens the contrast, which is the entire point of the dish.
